Choose Your Spawn
We offer:
• Fresh made to order sawdust spawn
• Plug spawn for easy log inoculation
Both are produced from our working farm cultures.
⸻
Start With the Right Logs
Chestnut mushrooms prefer fresh hardwood.
• Cut healthy hardwood logs
• Let them rest about 2 weeks after cutting so natural antifungal compounds break down
• Avoid old or dried logs
• 4 to 6 inch diameter is the sweet spot
Older logs dry out quickly and native fungi move in fast. Fresh logs win.
⸻
Sawdust Spawn Method
You will need:
• An inoculation tool
• Wax to seal holes
Drill, fill, seal.
If you want a low tech method, you can:
• Make a chainsaw cut and pack it with spawn
• Use the totem method
• Or for small batches, place logs in a closed trash bag at room temperature for a couple months
The bag traps moisture and often replaces the need for waxing. Just do not forget to remove them.
⸻
Plug Spawn Method
Great for beginners.
• Use an 8.5mm or 5/16 inch drill bit
• Drill 1 inch deep holes (a stop collar helps)
• Hammer in plug spawn
• Seal with wax to prevent drying
You can also use the trash bag method during early colonization to hold moisture and speed growth.
⸻
The Waiting Period
Chestnut mushrooms take patience.
Logs typically need 6 months to a year to fully colonize in a shady, moist location.
They are alive and vulnerable during this time. If you experience drought conditions, water them like you would a plant.
When you start seeing mushrooms naturally forming on the inoculated set, that is your signal the log is fully colonized and mature.
⸻
Fruiting
Chestnuts fruit in warm conditions.
When nighttime temperatures stay above about 60°F, you can:
• Soak logs fully submerged for 24 hours
• Expect harvest about a week later
Or let nature handle it during extended warm rain events.
⸻
Long Term Production
Logs can produce for 3 to 6 years or longer.
A rough rule:
About 1 inch of log diameter equals roughly 1 year of production.
Thicker logs last longer but colonize slower.
In our experience, 4 to 6 inches is the sweet spot.

If you want a chestnut mushroom log strain that is aggressive, reliable, and tested in real Appalachian conditions, this is it.
We grow what we sell.
And we stand behind it.
