It colonizes quickly and typically produces within 6 months, usually the following spring or fall after inoculation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt has a unique branching, cascading look that really stands out at a farm stand or on a chef’s plate. Flavor is very similar to lion’s mane, mild and slightly sweet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt fruits across a wide range of seasonal conditions. We farm it year round in Southwest Virginia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e⸻\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eChoosing Your Spawn Type\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWe offer:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e• Fresh made to order sawdust spawn\u003cbr\u003e\n• Plug spawn for easy log inoculation\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThese are locally tested, heavy producing commercial strains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIf your goal is log production, we highly recommend Hericium americanum or comb tooth types.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are growing on indoor fruiting blocks, traditional Lion’s Mane performs best in that setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e⸻\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLog Selection Matters\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e• Cut fresh hardwood logs\u003cbr\u003e\n• Let them rest about 2 weeks after cutting so natural antifungal compounds break down\u003cbr\u003e\n• Avoid old or dried logs\u003cbr\u003e\n• 4 to 6 inch diameter logs are the sweet spot in our experience\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe thicker the log, the longer it can produce. Expect 3 to 6 years of production under good conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e⸻\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSawdust Spawn Instructions\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eYou will need:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e• An inoculation tool (available from Field \u0026amp; Forest or online retailers)\u003cbr\u003e\n• Hot wax or pliable wax to seal holes\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDrill, fill, and seal each inoculation point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are only doing a few logs, you can skip wax by placing the logs in a trash bag for a couple months while they colonize. Just do not forget about them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAnother low tech option is the totem method. You can also cut a wound with a chainsaw and pack it with spawn. Keep logs out of direct sun and somewhere warm to speed colonization. If conditions are very dry, water them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFruiting usually happens after a multi day rain event followed by warming temperatures.
